BALANCE FINANCIAL | Shawna McCrea

Neighbors in Business is a series of interviews with Kelowna business owners, entrepreneurs and community leaders. Each article is an opportunity for us to get to know the people behind the local businesses: their story, their vision, and their challenges. It is our way to recognize their hard work and their daily contribution to the economic well-being of our beautiful city.
What did you do before starting Balance Financial?
I worked at TD Canada Trust for 21 years, 15 years as a Branch Manager.
How did you get the idea?
I didn’t like the direction of the ‘bank’s’ approach. I saw an opportunity to focus more on the true needs of clients rather than sales and transactions. Having the background in the financial services industry allowed me to transfer my prior skills and experience to my business.
When did you start your business and how was your first year?
I started in 2016. I have learned so much and have connected with some great people. The support from connections in the community has been amazing. I became a Gold Key Advisor with Great West Life. The team at Wealth Link have been great contributors in my business and I love that they are local.

If you look back did you imagine it would be like this?
Yes, I trusted that things would work out and I would figure out how to grow my business organically. The flow of local support has been better than I imagined.
What do you like most about this business?
It’s the people, I enjoy helping and supporting my clients with their life goals and challenges.
What makes Balance Financial unique?
I am great at providing a safe and non-judgemental environment, and my clients feel comfortable opening up to me about their personal situations.

What is your biggest challenge? To me, I find it difficult when people are struggling financially and have come to see me for solutions but all I can provide is minimal guidance. Sometimes people are in trouble and beyond my stretch of help. I always look for ideas and suggestions and try to connect them with others that may be able to help.
Did you grow up in Kelowna?
I grew up in Calgary. I have lived in Kelowna for 14 years and I love the growing and changing community.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Do your research, communicate with others in the industry.
What are you looking for in an Accountant?
Good communication.
