CONSTRUCTIVE SOLUTIONS GROUP | Jason Colvig

Neighbors in Business is a series of interviews with Kelowna business owners, entrepreneurs and community leaders. Each article is an opportunity for us to get to know the people behind the local businesses: their story, their vision, and their challenges. It is our way to recognize their hard work and their daily contribution to the economic well-being of our beautiful city.

What did you do before starting Constructive Solutions?

I used to be a motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson and after relocating to Kelowna I worked at Konquer Motorcycles, here in Kelowna.

I decided to go into business with a close friend whom I grew up with. We opened a franchise of Trade Labour Corporation as a Partnership here in Kelowna. My partner had already operated this same business on the lower mainland

We started this business in 2007, the economy was booming and we had a great first year in business.

If you look back did you imagine it would be like this?

Yes and No, certainly some things some aspects are as I expected but the heavy workload that continued to stretch over several years perhaps was a bit of a surprise, perhaps due to the economic conditions we experienced after 2007.

What do you enjoy most about this business?

I enjoy the flexibility of being able to create my own schedule and have greater control than in the past as an employee. He also appreciates meeting and getting to know his clients that hire his workers, as they have similar interests and work environments so they can relate on many levels.

What makes your company unique?

It’s unusual for our business type to be owner operated, as our competitors are subject to higher staff turnover which can become a challenge in this industry.

What is your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge in my business is maintaining a consistent balance between the supply of workers and demand for work.

I grew up in North Vancouver, he moved to Kelowna in 2005. He started a family here and loves all that the Okanagan has to offer.

What advice would you give to someone starting their own business?

I would suggest you make sure you find something that is going to be profitable enough. I also think choosing something that will keep you inspired to push through the challenging times is key.

What do you look for in an Accountant?

I appreciate that my Accountant knows this Industry and business processes well.
