SIMS JEWELRY CO | Sarah Simpson Byrne

What did you do before starting Sim‘s Jewelry?
I used to work as a Commercial Insurance Broker. I did enjoy it but it had its challenges.
How did you get the idea?
I worked with a lot of business owners and I always knew I wanted to own my own business one day. I was on maternity leave and I started making jewelry for my friends and family as gifts.
I received lots of great feedback and pretty soon everyone was asking me for more.
When did you start your business and how was your first year?
I started 10 years ago.  It was very exciting to start from scratch creating my own designs and brand.
If you look back did you imagine it would be like this?
No, I thought that by now I would have expanded more.  I didn’t picture my business being at the Farmers Market but it turned out to be a great opportunity to share my business in the outdoors with the local community. I am grateful to be able to work hours during the day and be able to pick up my son after school.
What do you like most about this business?
The flexibility and freedom are the best part.  I can create my own schedule and work from home as well.
What makes Sims unique?
The jewelry is very multi-functional and multi-purpose.  My jewelry can be used to dress up clothing and accessories and act as necklace and bracelet pendants, its affordable and great quality.  The necklace chains can be worn as both necklaces and bracelets and in worn in different styles.

What is your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenges today are the US exchange rate and how that impacts our profit margins.
I also find it difficult to select the best online marketing tools that produce optimal results.
Did you grow up in Kelowna?
I grew up in Vernon and have been living in Kelowna for 20 years.  I love the Okanagan!
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
I would make sure you have a backup plan and extra cash flow for unexpected events and costs. Also, be prepared to spend a lot of time and energy on your business, especially early on in the start-up stage. Connect with other business owners and stay motivated.
What are you looking for in an Accountant?
I would like my Accountant to provide ongoing advice on how to reduce taxes, I’m also looking for someone who proactively makes suggestions on how to become more profitable.
